BIOMAC ready to provide inputs to standardization
The Challenge in Standardization
The EU has currently no specific legislation on nanotechnologies, but the European Commission has developed several instruments for implementation - like standards - to reinforce nanotechnologies/nanomaterials requirements in existing legislations (e.g.
REACH). The European Commission has requested the
European Committee for Standardization (CEN) to develop deliverables that could be considered in some ways supporting forthcoming legislation. Therefore, some aspects of the standardization work may be associated with regulation in the future.
CEN/TC 352 'Nanotechnologies' develops standards on classification, terminology and nomenclature, metrology and instrumentation, test methods modelling and simulation and more, related to nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. The TC works closely with the international committee
ISO/TC 229 'Nanotechnologies' and has published more than 15 EN ISO documents, addressing topics of global relevance and avoiding the duplication of work at European and international level.
BIOMAC innovation
The bio-based sector is one of Europe’s most resource-intensive. As a key player in the economy, it serves as an impetus towards circular business models of resource efficiency.
In BIOMAC, biobased nanomaterials are combined with biotechnologies to convert renewable (biomass) resources into high value-added biopolymers to be used by companies in the sectors of food packaging, construction, automotive and printed electronics. The technologies offered by the OITB have been developed up to TRL4-5 and will be able to be upscaled and validated up to TRL 7 by the end of the project lifetime.
BIOMAC has established a concrete community of open collaboration for stakeholders who are interested in enabling innovation across these sectors: BIOMAC has created an Open Innovation Test Bed (OITB) ecosystem, which is openly accessible to external industrial players for benefiting from free of charge services offered by the BIOMAC consortium partners.
BIOMAC potential contribution to standardization
What type of inputs?
BIOMAC is interested in offering expertise to the CEN/TC 352 and to its national mirror committes on how renewable (biomass) resources can be converted in high value-added biopolymers to be used by companies in the sectors of food packaging, construction, automotive and printed electronics.
BIOMAC is interested in feeding to the CEN/TC 352 the information on the developed technologies.
How?
- The inputs can be provided by several partners who have been developing the technologies offered by BIOMAC with direct participation to the CEN/TC 352.
- BIOMAC has also submitted an application to become a Liaison Project to CEN/TC 352.
